Viva la Coldplay

I finally got my birthday gift last week.  Actually, I “got” it when Mindy called me and said, “We’re getting Coldplay tickets,” but that was some weeks before showtime at Nissan Pavilion.

Last week, she made good on it.

As both space and time are limited (for the blog…don’t hit me with irrational ever-expanding universe junk), I can only give you a brief view to this show’s—this band’s—awesomeness.  Here’s a 4corners-style look at my Viva la Vida Tour impressions:

  1. Coldplay’s visual production is unparalleled by any other performing group. From evolving lighting rigs to floating yellow balloons to windblown cherry blossoms to “how’d they do that?” video effects, the performance was quite literally spectacular.
  2. Coldplay’s set is positively brimming with hits and fan-favorites. When your concert starts with “Violet Hill,” “Clocks,” “In My Place,” and “Yellow,” you know you’ve got a good time on your hands.  Most groups don’t have that much quality in a whole show.
  3. Coldplay share the love. Like, when they played two songs from a side stage in the midst of the pavilion.  Or when they played a further three songs from a stage on the lawn.  Did I mention we were fifteen feet from said lawn stage? Pictures coming soon…
  4. Coldplay appreciate their fans. How much?  Enough to produce an entire live CD—Left Right Left Right Left—to give away to every person at every show.

Anecdote: The lawn stage was being set-up at the start of Coldplay’s newest single, Lost! (The exclamation point is part of the song’s title.  I was nowhere near that excited about that sentence.)  Now, if you’ve heard the B-side versions of Lost!, you already know that one version—Lost+—features Jay-Z. Mindy, of course, had heard the B-sides.  Upon seeing a mic appear on the lawn stage at just the right moment, she began to swoon over a possible Jay-Z appearance.  Homegirl was about to faint as Jay-Z’s would-be rap bridge came and went.  She may have been the only person slightly disappointed by a Coldplay close-encounter.

Love: Curb your jealousy, and download the entire Left Right Left Right Left record here.

Limb: Coldplay are the best live act on the planet.  Yeah, I went there.
